The Museum Collection - Farming

Photo of Farm Tools Available to View in the Farming Collection

Due to restrictions in space, most of the agricultural items displayed related to small scale one man operations.

These include seed and grass sowers, feed chopping devices, and a good collection of hand tools. At the most basic agricultural level we have a shaped zinc basin which was used for hand broadcast sowing - a technique which is straight hangover from biblical days.

There are several exhibits relating to harvesting, including scythes, sickles of all shapes and sizes, hay sampling rods and a portable winnowing machine, again hand powered.

We also have several excellent scale working models of larger machinery, including a threshing machine, a hay lift and a portable horse drawn steam engine, of the sort used by farming contractors at the end of the 19th century.
